IC INFORMATION
Character Name: Jeff Calhoun
Species: Human (Gifted)
Canon: Original
Canon Point: Summer of 1995, after having spent months and months
Character Age: 21
CRAU: No
CRAU Explanation: N/A

Character Appearance: Tall, with long legs and a slight build, and an uncoordinated style that could best be described as thrift store chic. His hair's thick and often unruly, on the longer end of short, and often blonde from the sun. Generally, he looks like he could do with some good sleep and a proper meal. (Reference)

Powers and Abilities: As a bard, Jeff makes magic through music; he can only cast through humming, singing, whistling, or playing an instrument. He likes to use magic whenever possible, often in frivolous, flashy ways. Style over substance! Theoretically, with time, research, practice, and a ton of trial and error, he could develop all sorts of spells, but generally he sticks to his established wheelhouse:
  • Telekinesis: He can move objects (or small living creatures) provided 1) they're in his general vicinity, 2) he knows where they are, and 3) they're not all that heavy (basically anything an adult man in decent health can reasonably lift). So Jeff could never lift a car with magic, but he could put it in park by manipulating the gearshift.
  • Empathic Manipulation & Intoxication: One of his go-to party tricks is to sway the moods of his audience. His spells can have an intoxicating effect on the listener, usually a temporary state of euphoria or lowered inhibition. On the darker end of the spectrum, he can induce hysteria, terror, aggression, and other negative emotions, but it's nothing he has any interest in doing. Typically, effects wouldn't last for more than 30 minutes, and would be weaker/more diluted if cast over larger groups. On his own, Jeff can have a moderate effect on a handful of people. When amped up by other magic users (like his bandmates, back home), he can work a crowd into an ecstatic frenzy. Note: This ability is opt-in only, and will be included in a permissions post if he regains it.
  • Pyrokinesis: Starting fires is Magic 101, and Jeff's no exception-- provided there's something flammable to actually ignite. He can light a candle, or start a campfire, or set someone's clothes on fire if they're being a total dick... Jeff can snuff out small flames, but he can't stop an uncontrolled fire. Beyond lighting/snuffing out fires, Jeff can manipulate them a little with magic, but only in flashy, pointless ways. He can make them move or take shapes temporarily, but that's about it.
  • Lights: Jeff can use magic to light up an area-- sparkling fairy lights, or creepy will-o-the-wisp looking things, or colorful lights, and so on. They're showy, pretty, and temporary. He can be a one man Laser Floyd show.
  • Clairvoyance & Locating: Sometimes, Jeff can use magic to find things, or he can 'read' some information from an object, mostly in the form of vibes and faint impressions. As a teenager, Jeff would use this kind of magic to try to locate and steal test answers from his teachers.
  • Blight: He can kill plants, but it's rude and he tries not to. He only picked up this spell after repeatedly trying and failing to nurture plants into growing. He just wants to grow some flowers, man!
In addition to all the magical wizard shit, Jeff's an exceptional guitarist and talented singer, and he's got some standard juvenile delinquent skills, like shoplifting, basic breaking and entering (ie simple locks), and uhhhhh urban foraging (dumpster diving).

What Did Your Character Wish For? He wished to be free from his demon, so hey, wish sort of granted!
What Potion Did They Receive? Golden
Did They Drink It? Oh yeah, without hesitation. Now he can turn into an adorable, screamy little opossum.

Character Questions:
1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon? Or who is someone they miss the most?
The answer to this question is a big old: It's Complicated. If you ask Jeff who he's most bonded with, and who he'll miss the most, he'd answer with his best friend/roommate/drummer, Ally. Best friends since childhood, she's, like, his platonic soul mate, and the real creative driving force behind their band, The Nervous Tix. She's driven, principled, fearless, and outspoken, which totally complements Jeff's own drifting, dreamy, hippie dippie persona. Though their friendship's become strained from Jeff's own thoughtless and destructive behavior (and we'll get to the reason why in a moment), Jeff still considers her his other half, and her absence (along with his own guilt for alienating her back home) will weigh heavily.

Onnnnn the flipside, we've also got Ziggy, an abstraction of pure magic that Jeff accidentally summoned with his ritualistic music. Their bond is an unwilling one, the two of them tethered together, imprisoned by each other, and driven to a slow mutual madness (because, hey, Ziggy doesn't want to possess Jeff any more than Jeff wants Ziggy in his head). Ziggy was a constant presence, talking to him, warping his perception, making it difficult to tell what's real and what's a hallucination. It reached the point where every moment felt like a terrible dream that he couldn't wake up from.

Upon waking up in the Labyrinth, Jeff will find himself free from Ziggy for the first time in nearly a year, and... Yeah, here's where the It's Complicated comes in. For as much as he feared and hated Ziggy, he also loved it, in some needy, fucked up way. To go from having a constant presence with him, to a very abrupt silence and solitude, will leave him feeling unmoored and... probably a bit empty. Jeff doesn't want to admit it, but he'll miss Ziggy.

2. What are they most afraid of?
Oh Jeff's got so many fears and insecurities, but the biggest is probably that people will realize he's an empty, vacuous, selfish monster if they really get to know and 'see' him. And that he'll hurt and disappoint anyone who cares about him, as he's done so many times over with his family and friends (to the point where his band just dumped him, right at his current canon point). And, worst of all, that he'll ultimately be left with only himself for company. Good times!

3. What is their weakness? Emotionally, mentally and physically?
Physically, Jeff's a noodle who can't fight and doesn't have an athletic bone in his body. He looks like he could use a good meal and a very long nap. He's also wildly self destructive, and will often act without considering consequences. He'll frequently seek out highs from recreational drug and alcohol use, unsafe sex, and generally impulsive, thrill-seeking behavior. He's sort of like a free spirit taken to a dysfunctional extreme.

Jeff's already risky behavior has taken an even more dangerous spin recently, as he's developed this feeling of disconnect with his own body, sometimes regarding it as nothing more than a puppet made out of meat and bones. It's another result of being kind of sort of possessed by a demon for so many months. He easily and carelessly objectifies himself, feeling little possessiveness or protectiveness over his body. He's willing to put his health and safety at risk-- or, rather, it's just something he's stopped considering as much when he acts. Self preservation is little more than an afterthought, and on some level, he's flirting with impending disaster, almost daring it to come for him, because he's reaching a point where he feels as if he's got nothing to lose.

Oh, and also he's extremely needy. Which, hey, he's a performer, so of course he craves attention, but it goes a bit deeper than that. Though he won't readily admit this to others, it feels like there's some bottomless black hole in him that feeds on being loved and adored and cherished, and it's always hungry, never satisfied.

4. What would make them happiest?
Jeff's happiest when he's performing, and his greatest desire is to share his music with the entire world. All Jeff's ever really dreamed about was the spotlight, and the sound of a screaming, adoring crowd is the greatest high he can experience. But beyond those dreams of fame and love and worship, what would really make Jeff happy is if he reconciled with Ally and his bandmates... And also got a hug from his mom. That'd be pretty great.

5. What’s their type for a lover?
Jeff's a sucker for bossy, assertive, domineering people, and he does best with those who have big hearts and a lot of compassion, as they tend to bully him into taking better care of himself. He's also drawn to those with loads of charisma, for better or worse, and if they give him enough praise and attention, he'll be wrapped around their finger.

Basically, he can just as easily be a gangster's moll as he can be an equal partner with a lover, depending on the type of bossy person he falls for.
